Mood Indigo: Smoky Orange Vanilla Black tea

Rated 4.4 out of 5
Based on 163 reviews

Tastes Like: blood orange, blackberry, amaro, candle smoke
Feels Like: the jazz age

This sophisticated smoky orange blend has a myriad of flavors. It's mysterious and delicate all at once. Imagine an ordinary door that leads downstairs to a shoebox nightclub. Your eyes adjust to the darkness of a room dotted with candles and a spotlight. From the first sip, this tea is smoky and spiritous. At the heart of the tea, you taste burnt orange, aromatic herbs, vanilla and allspice. The tea finishes with blackberry and the pleasant bittersweetness of Italian amaro and rye whiskey. Milk mellows the tea’s smokiness and plays up its sweet orange notes. It makes an elegant iced tea. A tea for lovers of amaro and spiced orange.

📝 Blender's Notes

This elegant tea blend is a rerelease from the early, highly experimental years of August blends.

I wanted to create a smoky tea mild enough to carry the delicate scents of burnt orange, herbs and spice. I was looking for the layers of flavor you find in fine wines and Italian amari. To do this, I chose a mild Taiwanese lapsang souchong base and added a host of elegant spices and herbs to keep the smoke light. This extraordinary fruit herbal black tea blend drinks like a mild black tea with vanilla and orange at the heart, and a whisper of smoke like that of a candle freshly extinguished.

It's a jazzy sensual vibe. Red wine fans, lovers of amaro and fine vermouths will appreciate this flavor.

There are those who will shy away from this tea for its smoky note. There are smoky tea lovers who may wish for it to be a bolder, more tannic tea. My hope is that this blend will be a delightful experience for anyone who's looking for a new flavor experience.

I encourage you to explore the variations of Mood Indigo flavor. So if you're inclined, please try it hot and iced. Add a splash of your favorite milk. Give it a kiss of honey. It's a little fruity, a little herbaceous, a little boozy, a little smoky, and oh so intriguing.

I drank it again this morning, and can't stop thinking about it. I can't wait to hear what you think.

Warmly,
Gina Zupsich

Bitter...way too bitter

This is the 1st tea that didn't do it for me. The orange peel had a weird smell and left a very bitter after taste.

Guess I'll stick with my two favorites, Combray Vanilla Cardamom Green Tea and Low Country Burbon Sugar Black Tea.

Guess you can't please everyone, everytime.

Still love the adventure of trying new teas. I'm sure one of my friends will enjoy trying Mood Indigo. Keep them coming!

Wild Ride

Brace yourself. this was a roller coaster of the senses from the beginning.

Dry leaves.

I felt like I opened a pack of big league chew bubble gum. SOOO not what I expected. All sugar, All sweet. Where's the smoke? I'm not giving up yet. There has to be more to this combo.

Steeping Aroma

Mmmm. There it is. That sultry old school tobacco smell, like lining a barrel for whiskey. Wraps you seduction. Thankfully that bubble gum is gone.

The first sip.

ugh. that front note. dang gum is back. wait... it's gone already. ooo what's this? oh. Bold main flavor of an old fashioned made with sour and rye and fresh bit of orange zest. classic. timeless. Sophisticated. And the aftertaste? The smoke returns. Picture a silhouette of woman in a dark nightclub with smoke whirling around her.

It's no mystery why they say this tastes like the Jazz Age. Don't let the first sniff full you. This tea is full of wonder and intrigue. A sultry dance of seduction.
