Diabolique - Almond Brittle Black Tea - 15 cup bag

Tastes Like: roasted almonds, burnt toffee
Feels Like: film noir

Fasten your seatbelts. This powerful black tea makes for a intense morning. It’s a strong, tannic black tea with roasted almond flavor and sweet brittle. Notes of caramel and almond balance the blend of Assam and smoked lapsang souchong black teas. This unique blend is reminiscent of Italian croccante almond brittle. Each sip has a lingering burnt toffee flavor. Adding milk increases the malty sweetness and mellows the smoke to create a dangerously delicious cup.

📝 Blender's Notes

I love the intensely roasted flavor of almond brittle. I’ve created a brooding almond black tea that is tannic, malty and nutty. Diabolique is my ode to almond brittle - that slightly burnt caramel almond confection.

The uncommon twist in this almond tea is the roasty, slightly burnt brittle flavor. This is not a creamy, nutty dessert tea like Passage or Cabaret. For some, the almond may be too subtle. Diabolique balance’s of bitter, malt and smoky sweetness. Its mysterious, gritty side is contrasted with the decadent sweetness of piping-hot almond brittle. The first sips are strong,  malty and super tannic. This blend has the mystery, seduction, and danger of the 1955 French film noir Les Diaboliques that inspired its name.

Diabolique’s brittle flavor has real caramel pieces and rock sugar bits. Not to worry, it has less than 0.5g of sugar per serving when brewed as instructed. All August blends have the same, or less sugar per serving. Because this tea has almond flavoring rather than nut pieces, this tea can be enjoyed safely by people with tree nut allergies.

Diabolique is neither super sweet nor super smoky. Its almond flavor is subtle compared to the smoky toffee flavor. It's not the sweet cookie almond of Know by Heart.

If you shy away from smoked tea, know that this blend is easy on the lapsang souchong. Its flavor is more tannic than smoky. It’s closer to Golden Arrow and our Breakfast blends.

Since Diabolique has sugar pieces in it, I don’t think it needs additional sweetener, but as always, this is a personal preference. Milk tones down the chewy tannins and smoke, and amplifies the sweet almond brittle flavor. It’s a full-flavored tea blend that is wonderful iced.

If you’re a lover of strong black teas, I hope you give this tea a try. Lovers of English Breakfast, Golden Arrow and August Breakfast will likely enjoy Diabolique.

    Light, Smoky Flavor

This tea smelled delicious but didn't quite have the almond flavor I was expecting from the description. I found this to be a very mild, slightly smoky black tea that was nice to drink black or with a bit of milk.

    Sweet and smooth

I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked this tea. I tried it iced and it was very smooth with that burnt almond taste and then the sweet hits you. Very good! I would definitely add it to my list of favorites

    Caramely Malt Heaven

Lovely balance of flavor that has skyrocketed to the top of my favorites! Perfect slight smokiness combines with the malted barley, burnt caramel & subtle almond flavor. Milk (especially almond milk) brings out more richness and flavor. LOVE this tea!

One thing's for sure: The aroma is diabolically good

DIABOLIQUE has a scent that I would buy as a candle. I can't help but take a few sniffs every time I open the packet, and the steeping tea offers a moment of olfactory bliss. The taste itself is quite good--I'll happily finish my 15-cup packet--but not enough for Diabolique to be added to my "reorder" list. There's a sweetness that kicks hard with a long steep, but is unfortunately tied to a bit of bitterness. A shorter steep eliminates both sweet and bitter and for me resulted in the best of the four taste tests I've made so far. There's just the right amount of smoky tones. Per August's suggestion, I tried adding some milk/cream and undoubtedly it enhanced what is otherwise only a hint of almond.

(My smoky teas-averse wife says there's too much smoke--but adding cream makes it less smoky and more sweet. She preferred the heaviest steep for its sweetness, as long as cream was available.)

For reference: My "five-star" teas include KNOW BY HEART and THE BLACK LODGE and GOLDEN ARROW and WILD HEART, while PSYCHOCANDY is probably 4.5 stars. I tend to prefer smooth black teas in general, but am sensitive to abundant bitterness. Diabolique's isn't abundant, but it is noticeable.
