Decaf Low Country - Bourbon Sugar Black Tea

$13.75
Size

Tastes Like: burnt sugar, buckwheat, chicory, bourbon
Feels Like: the forward familiarity of the south

Decaf Low Country has the full flavor of the original Low Country, but almost no caffeine so you can enjoy any time of day or night. It is decaffeinated using the nontoxic CO2 decaffeination process. This tea has the ostentatious warmth of a Southern drawl. It’s got robust body and character to match. In the first sip, the chewiness of burnt sugar mingles with the dark, rich flavor of buttery buckwheat hotcakes and finally, a latent chicory note. A drop of milk adds a whisper of bourbon. This is a fantastic morning tea to rival an English breakfast. Its potent charm ambles all the livelong day.

Is it REALLY decaf??????

Oh, WOW! This is one of the most flavorful decaf teas that I've ever tasted! Doesn't seem possible that with the strong flavor that is decaf. I'm not a fan of a strong tea so I was a little leery to try this. Shouldn't have been concerned. The flavor is similar to creme brulee. A beautiful tea. What a treat!

The Same Warm and Caramel-Like Scent and Taste I’ve Come to Love

I’m a fan of teas that taste of homemade caramels and have the aroma of the ingredients coming to a boil on the stovetop while making them. Low Country has offered that and been a great daytime drink. I was excited to try a decaffeinated version. My back-to-back test showed virtually no difference, perhaps a slightly lighter taste in the decaf tea, but not enough to make a difference. This tea is a winner and will be a new nighttime tea for me.

Rejoice!

Being a massive tea drinker who also struggles with anxiety, it is constantly being recommended to me to cut out caffeine. Herbal teas are okay, but in the morning, I just need those black, dark, flavorful teas. I got hooked on August many years ago, and have silently been hoping they might take that step into the decaf world. THANK YOU August! Low Country is one of my favorites, so I literally squealed when I saw a decaf option. I have now prepared it black, unsweetened with steamed milk, and sweetened with steamed milk, and they are all divine. There is a slight difference from the caffeinated option; the aroma is a bit muted and I get less of the thick caramel taste, but I'm honestly just splitting hairs here. Comparing this to all of the (many, many) decaf black teas I've tried over the years, this is no question the best I've ever tried. The quality knocks it out of the park, and the flavor is rich and complex and deep and so delicious no matter how you prepare it. So happy that there's now an option to mix this with another tea to make some half-caf and possibly take that leap and try the full decaf route for a while and see how it feels. If you're sensitive to caffeine, you now have high quality, delicious options!

Different, but same..

Having become caffeine-sensitive through the sands of time finding quality caffeine -free alternatives is truly a battle of persistence. Thankfully, August gets this. I loved the richness of this black tea when I was imbibing the 'fully leaded' variety. I can say that there is a slight 'tang' to the initial sniff from the bag, that would be the CO2 action having occured. It does not affect the flavor at all. I tried it in all positions of drinking, it holds value in the unsweet/black, sweetened/black, unsweetened/cream and finally, sweetened/cream which is my preference. The notes strike as expected the hints pick up and I am grateful for a decaf to allow enjoyment of this beloved flavor.

Lives up to expectations

I've been a long-time fan of the original Low Country and I am so excited to try out the decaf version. Before writing this review, I brewed both versions today and tried them side-by-side. Compared to the original, the decaf version has somewhat less complex flavor due to its decaf nature. It has very little tanning and less of the bourbon note, making the caramel stand out more. It's exactly what I would expect from a decaf version of Low Country. Very happy that I now have a decaf alternative for late day enjoyment.
