Decaf Passage has the rich flavor of the original Passage, but almost no caffeine so you can enjoy any time of day or night. It is decaffeinated using the nontoxic CO2 decaffeination process. Early morning in Paris rewards you with rich aromas from winding cobblestone streets. A steamy gust of croissants and sugared brioche hits your nose. Moments later, you smell molten chocolate from the chocolatier being dripped into fantastical shapes. The dense, chocolaty flavor of this tea will engulf your senses. Another sip brings a thick blast of roasting nuts. Milk takes this tea into decadent territory. Prepare for a luxurious breakfast experience.

Passage is one of our most beloved tea blends ever. It's held a position in the top 5 teas for over a decade. This nutty chocolate black tea is just a bit addictive, but in the healthiest way. Coffee lovers say Passage makes an amazing coffee replacement.

Now, Passage fans can enjoy Passage in decaffeinated form.

The inspiration for Passage comes from my scent memories of Paris. Wandering the streets early in the morning, especially on a crisp fall or winter day rewards you with the decadent aroma of boulangeries and pâtisseries preparing for the morning rush. The scent of baking bread, sugar, butter and melted chocolate in the morning, and in the afternoon, chestnuts roasting from street vendors is one of my favorite things about Paris.

The name comes from Passage du Désir, a charming mini street in one of my favorite neighborhoods of Paris. I felt the name was perfect for a seductive pastry-inspired tea. We eventually shortened the name to Passage for simplicity.

I love Decaf Passage plain and with a splash of milk. Brew it extra strong for an excellent latte. Because it has hazelnut brittle pieces, I don't think Decaf Passage needs sugar, but it gets if you add sweetener, it's even more chocolatey. Over ice, Decaf Passage has a delightful decaf mocha vibe.

We retained as much of the original formulation as possible. I've tasted Decaf Passage and Passage back to back and they are nearly identical. There is a small difference in the decaffeinated version: the decaffeinated black tea base is a little more tannic than the original. The tannins smooth with milk or alt milk.

If you monitor your caffeine, please note that this tea is not 100% caffeine free. We use the same CO2 decaffeination process because it is non-toxic and retains the natural flavor of the tea. This decaffeination process removes 96-97%.

🔥 Brewing Directions

Hot Brewing 10 oz

Heat 212°f/100°c water
Add 3.5g tea, about 2 teaspoons
Pour 10oz/300ml hot water
Infuse 4-5 mins. Longer is stronger.
Repeat Reinfuse 1-2 times

Iced Brewing 10 oz

Heat 212°f/100°c water
Add 3.5g tea, about 2 teaspoons
Pour ~3oz hot water to barely cover tea leaves
Infuse 4-5 mins. Longer is stronger.
Dilute with 7oz cold water
Serve Over ice

Pro tip: If you want more concentrated flavor, try doubling the tea leaves in this recipe.

Delicious decaf version of the original
To me, this version is extremely similar to the original (caffeinated) version. In other words, it tastes like dessert in a cup. What's great is now that it's decaf, I can have it in the evening when I'm craving something sweet but don't want caffeine. Perfect! I hope August creates more decaf versions of their black teas, like they did with Passage and Low Country.

Thanks for making this decaf!!
My mom can only drink decaf versions of coffees and teas, so when the Passage blend became available in decaf, I was excited to order some for her because she loves all things hazelnut. I have high expectations she will absolutely love this blend as much as I do!

Best decaf yet!
This one is absolutely incredible. I’ve only had the OG Passage a few times, so this isn’t a comparison. I’m supposed to be cutting back on my caffeine and I hate it because I pick teas because I love the flavor, not on caffeine content. So that makes it trickier to find things to swap. August is making that so much easier! Decaf Dark Iris is fine. Decaf Low Country made me so happy. But this? The best evening, dessert and anytime tea I’ve ever found.
I brew pretty much all my black teas strong with milk and Splenda. This works beautifully! I don’t know that I’d guess it was hazelnut, but I think that adds a delightful creaminess under the more prominent chocolate flavor. It also stands up to multiple steeps like most August blends.
All in all, this shot up to top five, maybe even top three, August tea for me with the first cup.

Great Tasting Tea
