FAQ: Caffeine & Decaf
How much caffeine is in your teas?
All pure teas, regardless of type deliver 40-60mg of caffeine per 10oz serving. Blended teas, especially those with lots of non-tea ingredients, will have less. Herbal and rooibos blends are naturally caffeine-free. If you're you'd like to avoid caffeine, look for our blends labeled 'herbal' or 'rooibos,' or choose our decaf options. Decaf teas typically have around 5% residual caffeine.
Do you have decaf options?
Yes — we carry decaffeinated teas here, and caffeine-free herbal teas here.
Are your herbal teas truly caffeine-free?
Yes. Herbal and rooibos teas contain no Camellia sinensis (the tea plant) and are naturally caffeine-free. They're a great choice for evenings, pregnancy, or anyone avoiding caffeine entirely.
FAQ: Ingredients & Dietary Needs
Are your teas organic?
Some are, some aren't — it depends on the specific blend. Here's a link to our organic teas. All our teas are double-tested for pesticide residues, heavy metals, and foreign objects. We prioritize quality sourcing, and many of our teas come from farms with sustainable practices even when not carrying an official organic certification. All our teas are safe and delicious!
Are your teas gluten-free?
Most of our teas are naturally gluten-free. Here is a link to our gluten-free teas. If you have celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, please check the ingredient lists for each tea you're interested in. We occasionally use malted barley in our blends, which is not a celiac-safe ingredient.
Do your teas contain any artificial flavors or additives?
Some of our teas have no flavoring. Some flavored teas are all-natural and some have artificial and natural flavors. Our unflavored teas are here. Our all-natural teas are here. Ingredient lists on each product page indicate when a flavor is natural — we believe in transparency about what's in every blend.
I have dietary restrictions / allergies. How do I know if a tea is safe for me?
The ingredient list on each product page is your best starting point. For allergen concerns not covered there, feel free to contact us directly via email or chat — our team can give you specific details for any blend. Always check with your healthcare provider first.
FAQ: Tea selection & Brewing Recommendations
I just want a plain, unflavored black tea. Do you carry that?
Yes absolutely. Our Essentials Line has many upgraded everyday staples like English Breakfast. Our Rare Leaves line is for connoisseurs of single-origin teas.
I'm new to loose-leaf tea. Where should I start?
Our samplers are the best entry point — they let you try multiple blends without committing to a full tin. The Tea explorer kit has an infuser and a mug to give you a complete loose-leaf tea experience. If you're a coffee drinker transitioning to tea, a bold black tea (like a Yunnan or Assam) tends to feel most familiar. Our Essentials teas are high quality classics are also a good entry point. If you prefer lighter drinks, start with a green or white tea.
How do I brew loose-leaf tea correctly?
• Black tea: 212°F water, steep 4–5 minutes
• Green tea: 175°F water, steep 4-5 minutes (hotter water or longer steeping makes it bitter)
• Oolong tea: 195°F water, steep 4-5 minutes (hotter water or longer steeping makes it bitter)
• Herbal / rooibos: 212°F water, steep 4-5 minutes
Use about 2 teaspoons of leaves (3.5 grams) per 10oz of water, adjusting to taste. Exact brewing instructions are also listed on each product page and package.
Can I re-steep the tea leaves?
Yes — most of our loose-leaf teas can be steeped 2–3 times. High-quality whole-leaf teas (especially oolongs) often reveal different flavor notes on the second or third steep. Enjoy the flavor adventure of each steep.
Can I add milk to your teas?
Of course. Milk is a personal flavor preference. Bold tannic black teas pair very well with milk. Chai-style blends are specifically designed for it. Green, white, and delicate herbal teas are traditionally made without milk — one expception is our grain-based herbal teas like Daybreak Coffee Alternative and Cult of Demeter. Love Story and Silent Night are also excellent with milk. Please drink your tea the way you enjoy it.
FAQ: Infuser Questions
How do I use the tea infuser?
Put the infuser in your mug or teapot
Add tea leaves to infuser. 2 tsp (3.5g) per 10oz.
Fill with hot water. Ideally use the correct water temp for the tea you're brewing (see package).
Cover with lid and wait for the infusion to complete.
When infusion is complete, remove the lid and flip it over. This is now a coaster for the infuser.
Remove the infuser and place on the coaster. Re-infuse the tea leaves when desired.
Rinse with water after each use. Occasional deeper cleaning with mild soap works fine.
What are the infuser and lid made of? Is it safe?
Our infusers are made from food-grade 304 stainless steel, and lids are food-grade silicone — both free from BPA and other harmful materials. These materials are FDA approved for repeated contact with hot liquids.
Will the infuser fit my mug or teapot?
Our infusers are designed to fit most standard mugs (typically those 2.5–4 inches in diameter at the opening). Check against your mug before purchasing.
The overall dimensions are L 4.25" x W 4.125" x H 3.5".
How do I clean the infuser?
Rinse thoroughly with warm water after each use to prevent clogging and tannin buildup. For a deeper clean, soak in a mix of water and white vinegar, or use a soft brush with mild dish soap. Avoid abrasive scrubbers that could scratch the mesh. The infuser is dishwasher safe.
Avoid letting wet tea leaves dry out in the infuser, as that can clog the small infuser holes. If clogged, soak it in hot water then scrub to remove the leaves.
FAQ: Health & Wellness
Are your teas safe during pregnancy?
Herbal and caffeine-free teas are generally recommended over caffeinated teas during pregnancy, though some herbs (like valerian, fennel, aniseed or peppermint) should be consumed cautiously. We'd recommend consulting your healthcare provider for guidance specific to your situation, as they can advise based on your health history and needs.
I have acid reflux / GERD. Which teas are safest for me?
Black and green teas are naturally acidic and may aggravate acid issues for some people. Herbal teas — especially chamomile, licorice root, or ginger — tend to be gentler on the stomach. Rooibos is another popular low-acid option. Everyone's sensitivity is different, so start with a small amount of any new tea. We have a few teas that are designed to be easy on digestion such as Nightfall Rest and Digest blend and Cult of Demeter.
How much tea is safe to drink per day?
For most people, 3–4 cups of tea per day is well within a healthy range. Many of the large-scale studies of tea's health benefits show the strongest effect at dosages of 3-4 cups per day.
If you're monitoring caffeine intake, factor in any other caffeine sources in your diet. Herbal teas are generally fine in larger quantities, though drinking any single herb in very high doses over long periods can occasionally have effects worth looking into.
We'd recommend consulting your healthcare provider for guidance specific to your situation, as they can advise based on your health history and needs.
