📝 Blender's Notes

I'm thrilled to share new special edition teas.

Rare Leaves are uncommon single estate teas.
Like precious gems, these teas are carefully selected for their exceptional beauty and flavor. Each tea is hand picked and finished to produce the most exquisite tea experience.

At the beginning of August Uncommon, we had a vision to share the most unusual, exciting teas. Our first releases included single origin teas we called 'Rare & Pure.' The Rare & Pure teas had their fans, but it was a minority of our small customer base who enjoyed them as much as we did. It was our bold tea blends that people craved most.

We decided to bring back limited edition teas in August’s new Rare Leaves line. Their packaging reflects their special character, and is inspired by rare cask or special reserve editions of whisky, as well as fine jewelry. This is why each tea has a gem inspired name with information about its growth elevation and location. Each tea has flavor notes, however pure teas have more subtle flavors.

Please be aware that Rare Leaves teas will not have the intensity of our blends with other flavorful ingredients and flavoring.

Rare Leaves are more expensive than other August teas. This is because of their special production. They are hand picked rather than machine harvested, and finished with careful manual technique. Where possible, we select organic teas for Rare Leaves. However, some teas, like charcoal roasted oolongs, are rarely produced in organic versions. Their character is so special that we decided to make one of our all-time favorite teas part of the first release.

One final recommendation is to consider using spring water to brew these teas so that you may enjoy their full flavor. I typically use Los Angeles tap water with my tea at home. However, these precious teas definitely deserve the best water to bring out their character.

These Rare Leaves are ultra limited edition. If you've ever wondered what the Rolls Royce of tea is like, now's your chance to find out.

Every other 5 star rating I've ever given feels like four stars after trying this tea. Buy this tea.

I couldn’t get much of a scent from the dried leaves beyond “black tea,” so I was worried when I first opened the container. Then I smelled the steeped tea and lost all concern, and maybe my mind a little bit, because - WOW, this tea smells heavenly. I spent the entire time waiting for it to cool down just breathing it in with such intensity I started to feel like a crazy person. I was mostly (mostly) trying to put it into words for this review, though. The only thing I can think of (that does it remote justice) is the sweetest, most delicious malted grain you’ve ever smelled and/or tasted in your life. Then I had a sip.

It. Is. INCREDIBLE. That delicious malty-ness remains in taste - not at all like a beer or alcohol malt, though, and I struggle to compare it to anything. It’s not sweet, necessarily. Just… comforting. Warm. Like stepping inside from a sun-bathed meadow walk and tasting your grandma’s freshly baked bread on the air. (I’ve never experienced that in my life, but after drinking this tea, I feel as though I have). It has virtually none of the astringency of typical black teas, it is smooth and hydrating over the tongue.

August’s other rare leaf tea, Black Pearl, I recommended oolong lovers try for the experience. But THIS. This tea – I beg anyone and everyone to buy it for the taste. It IS worth the price. By FAR the most amazing single-leaf black tea I have ever tasted. In fact, maybe the most amazing tea I've tasted of any single-leaf OR blend. Buy this tea.…

Crisp, delicious, refreshing

This is an amazing black tea. It knocks other black teas out do the water. It’s somehow simple and complex. It tastes fantastic both hot and iced. Highly recommend! And though it’s pricier than other teas, you can absolutely steal each 3.5g serving 3 times for all the amazing flavor, making this tea less than $1 per serving.

A Worthy Indulgence

As a big enjoyer of August's "Essentials Black Gold" product, I was very excited to see this tea launched. This single estate tea offers the same general taste, but perfected. Clover and honey notes are prominent, the black tannins are lovely, and the clarity of flavor is surprising. Honestly, I'd never have thought to describe a tea flavor as "clear", but here we are.

For steeping, I usually go with August's recommendation of 3.5g per 10 ounces of water, which will generate about 17 servings from this container. I found reducing the grams works well for this tea given its potency, so that could bring the serving count closer to 25.

It would be irresponsible of me to not mention the superb, aluminum container. I hope August offers it separately soon. The CNC aluminum tin oozes quality and every tea drinker/collector should have one.

A new love

I’ve yet to try an August tea I didn’t enjoy - here’s another star in my tea collection. A bit of malt, a bit of sweetness. It’s delicious with creamer and all on its own, I highly recommend this one. The sleek tin makes it that much more luxe!

Incredibly smooth, special black tea

I am generally a black tea fan, but usually take it strong with milk. I brewed this one as directed, at 195 for 5 minutes, and was surprised by how complex the flavor is - it's almost a bit floral, with a slight honey note. It reminds me almost a bit more of a roasted oolong than a typical black tea. I actually found that I liked it best without any milk, just by itself, to really enjoy the flavor, but it's nice with some milk or creamer too. The packaging also feels very lux and I like that the jars screw closed, to keep them airtight. Definitely great for a special occasion or a gift!
